Volunteer Navigator
Support individuals aged 55+ through health declines, offering a listening ear and helping connect them and their families to resources that promote independence and quality of life.
Role Description
A volunteer navigator is a listening, supportive presence who works with individuals aged 55+ and their families to facilitate connections, independence, and promote quality of life. By establishing relationships with the client(s), the volunteer learns who these individuals are and what is important to them in order to navigate the changes and needs that arise as they seek to live long and well in the place they call home. Volunteer navigators should be excellent problem solvers and know their community in order to locate services and resources that may benefit the client. Transportation reimbursement available to volunteers transporting clients.
Please be aware that as a volunteer navigator, you will be in a position of significant trust and authority, may have access to confidential information, and will commonly interact one-on-one with clients.
Goals of Service
Nav-CARE was developed to meet the needs of persons who may be living with chronic illness, facing loneliness or social isolation, and declining health through companionship, navigation, and connection. Volunteer navigators often begin their work with clients before they need home-based healthcare services. This proactive approach enables supportive care to be provided early on, preserving client independence for as long as possible. Nav-CARE clients say that volunteers make their lives “more livable.”
Time Commitment
Completion of the Nav-CARE training course (approximately 4 to 6 hours to complete all 7 modules) and attend recurring volunteer meetings which are required for this position. Volunteers and clients are able to arrange a schedule that works for both parties. Visits are typically 1 to 2 hours and can occur every 1 to 3 weeks.
